La Jolla 2013

March Escape to Find California Sun
  • After a long PNW winter, some CA sun is... magical.
  • Sunset surfing.
  • The beach at Children's Pool has been taken over by Harbor Seals.
  • Sea Fig ("French fry plant" as Yvonne knows them) are non-native and invasive, but they look nice growing all over the coastline.
  • Seal pup floats in Children's Pool.
  • A solitary raven warms up in the mornning sun.
  • Views above the sea caves... near The Cave Store.
  • California Sea Lions pile on each other to dry, rest, and warm. (All females.)
  • Two sea lion pups climb high up on some warm sandstone for a nap.
  • As the morning marine clouds burn away, shoes come off, sunscreen goes on...
  • Vertical Landscape
  • Aggressive ground squirrels will overrun you in Coast Park.
  • Yvonne, Queen of the Pacific.
  • Pelicans glide by all day long...
  • Yvonne's perfect place: on the ocean on a warm afternoon.
  • Western Gull tries to mesmerize me into handing over my granola.
  • We had no idea the water was so colorful and pocket beaches so numerous.
  • Yvonne, after crossing the Cliffs of Insanity, takes in the view on a perfect day.
  • Yvonne awaits sunset below the Scripp's Institute.
  • A Long-billed Dowitcher feeds in silhouette.
  • Scripp's Institute of Oceanography pier.
  • Some better angled light shows the Dowitcher's winter plumage.
  • Under the Scripp's pier.
  • Sunset at La Jolla Shores, near Kellogg Park.
  • Every morning, hundreds of cormorants form long lines as they leave their rookery to feed at sea.
  • Least Sandpiper, as far as I can tell. I don't know my shorebirds or their winter plumages.
  • Thanks for looking...
